Here's what I'm working on now-- one of the categories in the TF.N fanart challenge this month is a scene that was alluded to in the movies but not really seen. So here we have Leia's interrogation by Vader in ANH... she's being stubborn, as you can see. The only part of the lineart that's really finished so far is Leia's face, I've just blocked in the colors and a tiny bit of highlighting (no shadows yet) to get a sense of how it'll look when it's finished-- what do you think so far? Any comments are useful, I'm thinking that maybe the placement of the left bun isn't ideal, myself. Thanks!
Good idea! You might want to take a look at the shape and size of Leia's eyes here--matching them up (and making sure both are looking at Vader's mask) might be a good idea for increasing the emotional impact here. I think the hair looks fine, myself--a couple of sweeps of highlight, maybe to show that it's a bit "out-of-place," is about all it needs. This is a great idea for the challenge--looking forward to seeing it done!

Thanks! I'll take another look at the eyes, sometimes they're hard that way

Take a browse through some magazines and see if you can locate a face in a similar angle with a roughly similar line-of-sight, then study the way the eyes are constructed, and how the irises are placed--I've found a great deal of help in studying photos of human faces, both male and female, in many orientations and angles. It helps to cement the proportions and shapes of the features, as well as the placement. Eyes are almost always symmetrical--their shapes are relative, and the amount of "white" visible around the iris (the colored part) will always match (with a few notable exceptions, like extreme 7/8 profiles with a steep to-the-background gaze, and the like). If you need an example, I can probably help you out--just let me know!

No, I know what you mean, and I've usually done pretty well with eye gazes, they certainly are key to establishing mood in a picture-- I think I do have a better version now after taking a second look at them. Just that I was doing these in a somewhat realistic style without reference and it slipped my notice... I really appreciate you telling me so I could fix it!

I didn't update the version on here, FF! This is the most recent version, where I redid the eyes... [link] It also has some more shading on it, a slight change to Vader, and more detail.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
